Re:Anima is a two-year Erasmus Mundus joint master in animation, and its 2027 call is genuinely open: the consortium is accepting applications until 27 January 2027 at 23:59 WET. If you already have a portfolio and a bachelor's in animation or film, this is one of the few fully funded routes into European animation study that does not ask you to pay tuition first and hope for a refund later.
What it covers
The Erasmus Mundus scholarship pays the total tuition fee for the two-year programme and adds a monthly allowance of €1,400 for up to 24 months, intended to cover travel, installation and living costs. The consortium states that the number of awards varies between intakes, at 15 to 18 per call, so the pool is competitive without being microscopic.
The programme is built inside the FilmEU alliance, with Universidade Lusófona in Lisbon as the coordinating institution and IADT in Ireland and LUCA School of Arts in Belgium as partners. That structure matters practically: you will not spend two years in one building, and your work will be assessed by people teaching in three different animation cultures.
Who can apply
A bachelor's degree in animation or film production is the direct route. The consortium also accepts diplomas from other fields where the applicant can show relevant professional experience in animation, which is the clause that matters most for self-taught animators and for graduates of art schools whose degrees carry a different title.
There is no nationality restriction. The call is open to European and non-European students on the same terms, and the eligibility rules do not impose country quotas at the application stage.
Eligibility self-check
• Can you document a completed bachelor's at European Qualifications Framework level 6, or a diploma in another field plus a portfolio that proves professional animation work?
• Is your English at B2 or better — IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, TOEIC 605 in listening and reading, or Duolingo 110?
• Can you assemble a portfolio PDF of no more than 12 pages and a showreel of no more than two minutes, subtitled in English and hosted on an unlisted link?
• Can you write a project concept in 400 words, with up to two original images, that names technique, visual style, atmosphere and artistic references?
• Have you confirmed you have never held an Erasmus Mundus joint master or joint doctorate scholarship? Repeat holders are excluded.
• Are you ready to study in more than one country, with the visa and language work that implies?
Deadline
The scholarship deadline is 27 January 2027 at 23:59 WET. That is later than most Erasmus Mundus consortia, which cluster between 1 December and 15 January, so Re:Anima is a sensible second application when a first-choice programme has already closed.
A late date is not a soft date. Portfolio review happens after the call shuts, and a submission in the final 48 hours leaves no time to repair a broken showreel link. Three weeks of margin is the realistic minimum for a creative application.
How to apply
Applications run through the consortium's own portal, with no application fee and no national admissions system in between.
1. Register on the consortium application portal and complete the form in English. Paper applications are not accepted.
2. Upload your passport or national ID, a recent head-shot photograph, your final degree diploma with a certified English translation if required, your transcript and your CV.
3. Add the creative file: a motivation letter of no more than 1,500 characters, a project concept of no more than 400 words with up to two images, and a portfolio PDF of no more than 12 pages.
4. Submit the showreel as an unlisted link of no more than two minutes, with English subtitles and no password, then confirm the acknowledgement email arrives.
Application materials checklist
• Passport or national ID, ideally valid for the full two years of study.
• Degree diploma and transcript, with a certified translation where the original is not in English.
• English certificate at B2 or above, or a higher-education diploma taught in English in Australia, Canada outside Quebec, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK or the USA.
• CV that lists animation credits, not only job titles — the panel reads both.
• Motivation letter inside the 1,500-character limit; the form does not expand for you.
• Portfolio PDF at 12 pages or fewer, plus a showreel link at two minutes or less.
Common mistakes to avoid
• Sending a reel of other people's work, or a group project where your contribution is invisible. The panel is looking for your timing and your decisions.
• Treating the 400-word project concept as a plot synopsis. It asks for technique, visual style, genre, atmosphere and artistic references; a story summary reads as a missed instruction.
• Compressing 20 portfolio pages into 12. Legibility at normal zoom is part of how the work is judged.
• Assuming an English-medium letter from any university waives the certificate. The waiver list is short and specific.
• Applying without reading the mobility plan. This is a joint degree, and the semesters are not all spent in Lisbon.
Tips to win
Lead with one film you can defend. A reel organised around a single two-minute piece with a clear directorial choice is stronger than eight fragments, because any interview will start from the work you chose to show.
Use the project concept to prove you have read the programme. Naming a technique you want to learn and a reference you want to work against reads as preparation; naming a studio you admire does not.
Get a second reader for the motivation letter. At 1,500 characters there is no room for biography; every sentence has to connect your portfolio to a specific part of the curriculum, and a reader who does not know your work will spot the sentences that do not.
Check the tuition and living-cost arithmetic before you rank Re:Anima first. The stipend is generous by European standards, but Lisbon and Dublin rents are not, and the first month is always the expensive one.
If you are applying from Afghanistan or Pakistan, budget time for the diploma attestation and translation before the winter holidays, because that queue is often the real deadline.

Applications go directly to the consortium through the portal linked from that official page. If you want a second pair of eyes on the portfolio or the character-limited motivation letter, an OEAC advisor can review a draft with you before you submit.
