Sydney RTP International Scholarship 2027 — Fully Funded PhD
Fully funded PhD scholarship in Australia for International students 2026
Sydney pays a full stipend of AUD 44,293 a year and all tuition for a PhD, and the round for 2027 research periods 3 and 4 closes on 18 December 2026.
Eligibility
- Open to international students commencing or already enrolled in a higher degree by research
- Must meet the admission requirements for a PhD or research master's at Sydney
- Competitively awarded on academic merit and research experience
- Preference may be given to applicants intending to enrol in a PhD
- Applicants who already hold an Australian Government scholarship at the same level are disadvantaged
Australia funds doctoral study through a single national mechanism, the Research Training Program, and each university distributes its allocation through its own rounds. At Sydney the mechanism is straightforward in principle and easy to get wrong in practice, because the scholarship and the admission application are two separate submissions that share one deadline.
The round that matters now is the one for research periods 3 and 4 of 2027, closing on 18 December 2026. The earlier round, for research periods 1 and 2, closed on 11 September 2026, so anyone planning a mid-2027 start is already looking at the December cut-off.
What it covers
The RTP Stipend Scholarship pays AUD 44,293 a year at the 2027 rate, indexed each January. Recipients are automatically awarded the RTP Fee Offset, which covers 100% of tuition for up to 14 research periods, and Overseas Student Health Cover. Relocation and thesis allowances are added on top.
Fourteen research periods is the full length of a doctorate, which means the funding is structured to cover the degree rather than a first year. That is the main difference between this and the tuition-waiver scholarships common in Europe, where a second year often has to be funded separately.
There is a ceiling worth knowing about. You may hold another award, scholarship or salary alongside the stipend only if the combined benefit is worth less than 75% of the stipend; cross that line and the scholarship is terminated. Salary from work unrelated to your research does not count towards the limit, which leaves room for teaching or consulting that is not tied to the thesis.
Who can apply
The scheme is open to international students who are commencing or already enrolled in a higher degree by research, meaning a PhD or a research master's. Coursework master's students are not eligible, and applying for the wrong degree type is the most common structural error in this round.
Selection is competitive and based on academic merit and research experience. The published preference criteria favour applicants intending to enrol in a PhD, applicants who have not previously held an Australian Government or university scholarship at the same level, and applicants who have not already completed a degree at that level.
Eligibility: five questions to ask yourself
1. Are you applying for a research degree rather than a coursework master's? If the answer is unclear, stop and check the course code before going further.
2. Does your academic record meet the faculty's admission threshold, including the research component? A strong taught master's without a thesis is often not enough on its own.
3. Can you document research experience using the university's own template? Sydney asks for this explicitly, and an undocumented claim is treated as no claim.
4. Do you already hold an Australian Government scholarship at the same level? If so, the preference criteria work against you.
5. Can you be in Sydney for the research period you are applying for? Offshore applicants have outcomes finalised later, which affects visa planning.
Deadline
The submission deadline for research periods 3 and 4 of 2027 is 18 December 2026. Outcomes begin to be issued on 26 February 2027, and are finalised by 18 May 2027 for offshore applicants and 30 June 2027 for onshore applicants. The next round, for research periods 1 and 2 of 2028, closes on 10 September 2027.
Application materials checklist
You will need academic transcripts and degree certificates, a research proposal, evidence of research experience completed on the university's template, a CV, and English proficiency evidence at the level your faculty requires. International applicants should also prepare passport details and a realistic budget for the period between arrival and the first stipend payment.
Two documents cause most of the delays. The research experience evidence template is specific to Sydney and cannot be replaced by a generic statement. And the admission application through Sydney Courses requires all supporting documentation before it is considered complete, so an early submission with missing transcripts is not early at all.
How to apply
Apply for admission to the higher degree by research through Sydney Courses and upload every required document. Then submit the separate scholarship application form before the round deadline. Both steps are mandatory: the scholarship form without an admission application has nothing to attach to, and an admission application without the form is not considered for funding.
Common mistakes to avoid
Submitting only one of the two applications. Applying for a coursework master's and expecting research funding. Filling the research experience section with narrative rather than the evidence the template asks for. Assuming the stipend is tax-free in every case without checking your residency status. And applying in December for a start date that requires a visa timeline the outcome dates cannot support.
Tips to win
Contact a supervisor in the faculty before you apply and ask whether they have a project that fits the current round; a named supervisor with a funded direction is the strongest single signal in the file. Write the proposal as a three-year plan with milestones rather than a topic statement, because the panel is assessing whether the project can finish inside fourteen research periods. If you are offshore, apply in this round rather than waiting for 2028, since the offshore outcome date in May still leaves time for a visa.
