What it covers

The European Politics and Society programme, named after Vaclav Havel, is a two-year Erasmus Mundus joint master led by Charles University in Prague with Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Leiden University and Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. The first semester is spent in Prague, the second in either Krakow or Leiden, and the final year follows one of four tracks across the partner cities.

For students from outside the programme countries, the scholarship covers tuition valued at EUR 18,000 across the two years, deducted directly by the institution so that the fee is never paid and then reclaimed. On top of that come living allowances of EUR 1,400 a month for up to 24 months, or EUR 33,600 in total.

The package also includes insurance, guest lectures, the organisation of extracurricular activities and help with visa and administrative procedures in the consortium countries. Students pay their own travel to events other than the organised ones, which is a small caveat worth knowing when you budget.

The programme was selected for a new round of European Commission funding running from 2026 to 2031, which supports more than 50 scholarships across that period rather than in a single intake. The practical consequence is that the award is not a one-off gesture before the funding lapses.

Eligibility: who can apply

There is no age limit and no nationality restriction, and applying costs nothing. The academic bar is a completed bachelor's degree and English at C1 level, evidenced by CAE, IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 95, or through a full degree taught in English with a university certificate.

Run this self-check before you assemble the file:

Do you hold a bachelor's degree, or will you hold one before enrolment in September 2027?

Can you document English at C1? An Erasmus exchange semester in English is not accepted as evidence on its own.

Can you supply two previous diplomas, meaning your bachelor's certificate and your secondary school leaving certificate? The programme asks for both, and applicants who have only one in hand lose time obtaining the second.

Do you have a referee who can write a substantive recommendation rather than a confirmation of attendance?

Can you submit a complete file by 28 February 2027? Incomplete files are excluded from scholarship consideration regardless of quality.

Are you able to study in four different European cities over two years, with the associated visa and housing administration?

Deadline: the dates that decide it

Applications for the 2027 intake open on 1 November 2026. There are two dates, and confusing them is the single most expensive mistake in this application.

28 February 2027 is the scholarship deadline. Only complete applications submitted by that date are considered for the Erasmus Mundus award. 30 April 2027 is the general admission deadline, which remains open to self-funded applicants after the funded round has closed.

For applicants from countries where a Schengen visa is required, the consortium explicitly recommends the early date, because visa processing needs to start well before the September enrolment.

How to apply

Applications are submitted to Charles University through the online form linked from the consortium site. There is no application fee, and the same file is used for admission and for scholarship consideration.

The materials checklist:

Copies of both diplomas and transcripts, with certified English translations where the originals are not in English.

A short academic curriculum vitae in European format.

A motivation letter that engages with the programme's subject matter rather than with Prague as a destination.

One letter of recommendation.

The supplementary questionnaire indicating your study track preferences, which is a separate item from the motivation letter.

English proficiency evidence at C1, or a university certificate confirming a degree taught in English.

A passport copy and proof of your place of residence, such as a residence certificate or a certificate from your place of work, study or training.

The official programme page and the university's own admission record both carry the current dates:

Common mistakes to avoid

The first is applying in April and expecting funding. The April date exists so that self-funded candidates can still join; by then the scholarship round has been decided.

The second is skipping the supplementary questionnaire. It is easy to treat as a formality, but it is how the committee reads your track preference, and an application that expresses no preference is harder to place.

The third is a motivation letter that could be sent to any European studies programme. EPS is specifically about the societal, political, economic and cultural processes that shaped contemporary Europe, with an emphasis on migration, security and populism, and a letter that never touches those themes reads as generic.

Tips to win

Name a track and defend it. The final year runs across Prague, Krakow, Barcelona and Leiden, and each has a different research profile. Saying which one and why is the cheapest way to show you have read the structure.

Connect the degree to a career you can describe. The programme is explicit that it trains analysts and policymakers for EU institutions, national administrations, think tanks and international organisations, and an applicant who names the institution or policy area they are aiming at is easier to rank.

Use the free application well. Because there is no fee and no age limit, the pool is large, and the differentiator is the quality of two documents: the motivation letter and the single recommendation. Choose the referee for what they can say about your analytical work.
