Europhotonics Erasmus Mundus 2027 — Funded Photonics Master's in France
Fully funded Master scholarship in France for All nationalities students 2027
A two-year photonics engineering master's taught across Marseille, Karlsruhe, Barcelona, Tampere and Vilnius. Applications close 4 February 2027.
Eligibility
- Bachelor's in physics, applied physics, optical engineering or electrical engineering
- Solid mathematics and electromagnetism background
- Two referees who upload their letters directly through the portal
- English proficiency
- Apply at first-year (M1) level to be considered for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship
- Apply between 1 November 2026 and 4 February 2027, 17:00 Paris time
Photonics is one of the few engineering fields where a master's degree still leads directly to a research career, and one of the few where European consortia have been running funded mobility for over a decade. Europhotonics has existed since 2010, has been selected repeatedly by the European Commission, and for the 2027-2029 intake its portal opened on 1 November 2026 and closes on 4 February 2027 at 17:00 Paris time.
That window is longer than most. It is also deceptive: applications are reviewed as they arrive in practice, and a February submission competes with a pool that has been building since November.
What it covers
Erasmus Mundus scholarships are awarded after a selection procedure to students who enter at the first-year level, and cover participation costs together with the monthly living allowance that Erasmus Mundus sets. Students who enter directly at second-year level, or who are admitted without a scholarship, may still qualify for Erasmus+ mobility grants depending on their mobility path — a smaller and less certain form of support.
The programme is a two-year, 120 ECTS master's in photonics engineering, spanning biomedical imaging, quantum optics, laser optics, optics for astronomy, nanophotonics and biophotonics. The partner institutions are Aix-Marseille University, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the University of Barcelona, Tampere University in Finland and Vilnius University in Lithuania, with several non-European universities also associated.
The professional case is straightforward. Photonics is treated by the European Commission as a key enabling technology, and graduates move into industry, research laboratories and universities across health, energy, transport and telecommunications. If your undergraduate degree was physics or electrical engineering and you want a research-adjacent master's that is not a general engineering degree, this is one of the narrowest and best-funded routes available.
Who can apply
Candidates from all countries can apply, and the consortium admits at both first-year and second-year level depending on the diploma already held. The realistic entry profile is a bachelor's in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, optical engineering or a closely related discipline with a substantial mathematics and electromagnetism component.
There is no published country quota to work around, which is worth noting for Afghan, Pakistani and Chinese applicants who are used to programmes that quietly exclude them. The selection is competitive on academic record and on the fit between your background and the track you choose.
Ask yourself four questions. Does my transcript show at least a full year of mathematics and physics beyond introductory level? Can I name the photonics subfield I want and the partner institution that teaches it? Do I have two referees who will upload letters directly, because the portal requires them to submit, not you? And can I fund the first month of relocation before any stipend arrives, since scholarship payments start after enrolment?
How to apply
Everything runs through the consortium's application platform at application.europhotonics.org. You create an account, select the Europhotonics intake 2027-2029 campaign, and work through the form. Transcripts of records are entered online directly in the platform rather than uploaded as a separate scan, so have your grade scale and course list to hand.
The document set is standard but the reference mechanism is not: you nominate two referees, and the platform emails them a private upload link. You never touch the letters. That means the practical deadline for referees is earlier than 4 February, and a file missing its letters is not evaluated at all.
A passport copy or valid identity document is required, and scanned documents are accepted in common formats with PDF strongly preferred. Originals are requested only after selection, so do not post paper documents.

Tips to win
Pick a track before you write anything. The consortium assigns the final track after selection, but it takes your stated preferences into account, and an application that names a coherent research direction reads as though the applicant understands the field.
Use the transcript entry to your advantage. If your degree title is generic — "bachelor of science, physics" — the course list is what proves you have the optics and mathematics background the committee is screening for. Enter the advanced courses, not just the compulsory ones.
Common mistakes: nominating referees on the last day; uploading a scan where the portal wants typed transcript data; and applying for a second-year entry when the scholarship is reserved for first-year entrants. If funding is the objective, apply at M1 level.
A final caution about the two-year mobility. Living costs differ sharply between Marseille, Karlsruhe, Barcelona, Tampere and Vilnius, and the Erasmus Mundus allowance is a single figure. Budget the Finnish and German semesters at a higher monthly cost than the Lithuanian one, and do not assume the stipend covers everything in every city.

An OEAC advisor can review your course list against the photonics prerequisites, help you choose between the partner tracks, and check that both referees have received their upload links before the deadline.
