EMCL Clinical Linguistics 2027 — Fully Funded Erasmus Mundus Master's
Fully funded Master scholarship in Netherlands for All nationalities students 2026
A research master's in clinical linguistics taught in Groningen, Joensuu and Ghent, with a full fee waiver and EUR 1,400 a month. Deadline 1 December.
Eligibility
- Bachelor's or master's in linguistics, speech and language therapy, psychology or cognitive science
- Coursework evidence in phonetics, syntax or psycholinguistics
- English proficiency
- No previous Erasmus Mundus master's or doctoral scholarship held
- Apply by 1 December 2026 to be considered for the scholarship
Clinical linguistics sits at a junction that few programmes occupy properly: the diagnosis and treatment of language disorders, approached with the analytical tools of theoretical linguistics rather than only the clinical ones. EMCL is the Erasmus Mundus answer to that gap, and it is one of the shortest funding windows in this year's cycle — the portal opened on 1 October 2026 and closes on 1 December 2026.
That is four weeks from today. If you are reading this in early November and you have a linguistics, speech therapy or psychology background, this is the deadline to act on first.
What it covers
Scholarship holders receive a full tuition waiver and a monthly allowance of EUR 1,400 to cover travel, visa, installation, insurance and subsistence, for a maximum of two years — the nominal duration of the Research Master. The consortium fee that self-funded students pay is EUR 18,000 for the whole programme for partner-country students, and EUR 9,000 for programme-country students from the EU and EEA, which gives a clear sense of what the waiver is worth.
That fee covers registration at each partner, university administration, diploma costs, insurance, excursions, laboratory costs and participation in one edition of the Science of Aphasia conference including accommodation. Literature, accommodation, travel and other study costs are not included, and the monthly allowance is what those come out of.
The consortium is small and deliberate: the University of Groningen in the Netherlands as the administrative lead, the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu, and Ghent University in Belgium, working with 23 associated partners in research and industry. Students move between the three, which means two relocations in two years and three different health-insurance arrangements.
Who can apply
The realistic applicant holds a bachelor's or master's in linguistics, speech and language therapy, psychology, cognitive science, or a language degree with a strong phonetics or syntax component. Clinical experience is an advantage but is not the entry requirement — the programme trains researchers, and it expects you to arrive with linguistic analysis skills rather than a caseload.
There is a hard exclusion that catches people every year: applicants who already hold an Erasmus Mundus joint master's or doctoral scholarship are not eligible, and scholarship holders cannot hold another EU grant at the same time. If you did an Erasmus Mundus master's before, you can still apply to EMCL, but not for the scholarship.
Three self-check questions. Can I explain, in writing, why a clinical population interests me as a linguistic problem rather than only as a care problem? Do I have a transcript that shows phonetics, syntax or psycholinguistics, not just literature and translation courses? And can I complete an application in under four weeks, including a language test result I already hold?
How to apply
Applications go through emcl.eu, where the online form covers both admission and the scholarship indication. There is no separate scholarship application: you tick the box on the form, and the deadline for that tick is 1 December 2026, earlier than the general admission deadline for self-funded applicants.
The consortium is explicit that scholarship awards follow the ranking produced by the selection procedure, and that results are communicated from mid-February. Places are offered with or without funding, and if a funded student withdraws the next ranked applicant receives the offer — which means a reserve-list position in February can still convert in April.
Two administrative details are worth flagging. First, a limited number of self-payer places exist, so an unfunded offer is a real offer with a real EUR 18,000 fee attached. Second, the consortium asks applicants from Erasmus+ eligible countries to identify themselves, because several scholarships are earmarked for specific nationalities.
Tips to win
The programme is a research master's, so write like a researcher. A statement that names a phenomenon — specific language impairment in bilingual children, aphasia recovery patterns in agglutinative languages, the phonology of a minority language with no clinical literature — outperforms a statement about wanting to help people communicate.
Use your degree's methods courses. If you have done transcription in IPA, acoustic analysis in Praat, or elicited-production experiments, say so with the tool names and the corpus sizes. Those are the signals that separate a linguistics graduate from a language graduate.
Common mistakes: applying after 1 December and hoping for the self-funded round, which is a different and much more expensive route; submitting a motivation letter that could be sent to any master's programme; and ignoring the two-year mobility when budgeting, because Groningen, Joensuu and Ghent have very different rents.
One more: the consortium publishes the fee structure openly, so there is no excuse for arriving in September without having planned the EUR 18,000 contingency if the scholarship does not come through. Apply for the scholarship, but know your fallback before you accept a place.

An OEAC advisor can check whether your degree satisfies the linguistics prerequisite, help you frame a research question for the motivation letter, and confirm the 1 December scholarship deadline against the programme page before you submit.
