- European applicants: apply by 15 January 2027
A one-year LL.M. that teaches lawyers to read economics and economists to read statutes is a narrow product, and EMLE has been selling it successfully for three decades. The programme moves students through three universities in a single academic year, awards an LL.M. in Law and Economics, and for 2027-2028 it is open for applications now. The deadline for non-European applicants is 31 December 2026 at 23:59 CET; European applicants have until 15 January 2027.
The short duration is the point. Where most funded master's programmes ask for two years and a relocation every semester, EMLE asks for twelve months and three cities, which makes it unusually compatible with returning to a job, a ministry or a legal practice.
What it covers
The Erasmus Mundus scholarship is a monthly contribution of up to EUR 1,400 covering travel, visa, installation and subsistence for the period the student is on the programme, plus insurance coverage provided by the consortium for the whole academic year. Around fifteen scholarships are awarded each year across a five-year funding window, split between an overall ranking and a second category reserved for applicants from Erasmus+ target regions under IPA III and NDICI — a detail worth reading carefully if you are applying from Afghanistan or Pakistan, because the regional category can be a second route into funding.
Tuition is published separately: EUR 7,500 for EU and EEA students and EUR 12,000 for non-EU students. The consortium's own page describes the scholarship as a monthly contribution, so if the tuition treatment matters to your budget — and for most applicants it does — ask the EMLE secretariat directly how participation costs are handled for scholarship holders before you plan around it. Do not assume a full fee waiver because the award is Erasmus Mundus funded.
The academic structure is one year, three terms, 60 ECTS, taught in English. Students select two or three universities from a list that includes Rotterdam, Ghent, Aix-en-Provence, Barcelona, Rome, Hamburg, Warsaw, Mumbai and Haifa. That last pair matters: EMLE is one of the few European law programmes with genuine non-European teaching locations built into the degree.
Who can apply
Applicants hold a law degree, an economics degree, or a combined background, and the programme is designed for people who want the analytical overlap rather than a specialisation in either. Professional experience in regulation, competition law, tax, development finance or public policy strengthens an application considerably, because the seminars assume you have seen an actual legal or market problem.
English proficiency is required, and at least one reference letter must be submitted for the application to count as complete. That is stated plainly on the application page and it is the single most common reason a December file is discarded.
Three self-check questions. Can I explain a legal rule I would like to analyse using an economic argument, in two sentences? Do I have at least one referee who will submit before 31 December, not after? And can I live on the monthly allowance in Rotterdam, Ghent and a third city within twelve months, given that the allowance is described as covering installation and subsistence together?
How to apply
The application form for 2027-2028 was published on the EMLE website and the period opened on 1 September 2026. Applications are submitted through the platform linked from emle.org/application, with transcripts, degree certificates, identification, a CV, a motivation statement and at least one reference letter.
Only fully completed applications are considered, and the December deadline applies to non-European applicants — those from third countries not associated with the programme. European applicants and those from associated countries use the 15 January date. Admission status is communicated in March.
Tips to win
Frame yourself as a translator between the two disciplines. The strongest EMLE applications describe a concrete regulatory or commercial problem and show that neither a purely doctrinal nor a purely econometric approach resolves it. That is the intellectual case for the programme, and it is also the selection criterion in practice.
Use the university choice deliberately. If your interest is competition law and digital markets, the pathway through Rotterdam and Rome reads differently from one through Warsaw and Hamburg. Say why in the motivation statement.
Common mistakes: treating the December date as a soft deadline because the January date exists for Europeans; submitting without the reference letter and assuming it can follow; and applying with a personal statement written for an LL.M. in international law, which signals that you have not understood what law and economics is.
One honest note on funding. Fifteen scholarships a year against an applicant pool drawn from across the world is a competitive ratio, and the monthly contribution is not a full living grant in the Netherlands. Applicants who need certainty should treat EMLE as one application among several rather than a plan.

An OEAC advisor can review your motivation statement for the law-and-economics framing, check that your transcripts meet the degree requirement, and confirm the tuition treatment with the consortium before you commit to a city pathway.
