- Open to all nationalities, no age limit
- English proficiency

- One application round per year
ISTA PhD Program 2027: what makes this doctoral route different
Most doctoral scholarships pay you a stipend. ISTA employs you. Every admitted student receives a five-year contract with a salary and full social security coverage, which changes both your legal status in Austria and your ability to plan a life there. If you are comparing offers, that distinction is worth more than a slightly larger monthly figure elsewhere.
WHAT IT COVERS
Successful candidates are full-time employees for the duration of the programme, with a salary described by the institute as internationally competitive, full social security, tuition covered, and financial support for conference travel and research costs. Students spend the first year on coursework and rotations before choosing a research group, which means you are not committed to a supervisor before you arrive. The institute sits outside Vienna in Klosterneuburg and works entirely in English, with staff drawn from over eighty nationalities.
WHO CAN APPLY
ISTA welcomes applicants holding either a bachelor's or a master's degree in biology, chemistry, neuroscience, mathematics, computer science, physics, data science and scientific computing, astronomy, earth science and related areas. There is no age limit, and no nationality restriction. Final-year students may apply provided the degree is completed before the programme begins.
A short self-check before you start:
- Do I have a bachelor's or master's in a relevant scientific discipline? - Can I write a one-to-two page statement of purpose that names specific ISTA groups and explains why? - Can I produce transcripts in English as well as in the original language? - Do I have three referees who will submit before the referee deadline, which falls four days after the applicant deadline?
The third point quietly disqualifies a lot of applicants. ISTA requires transcripts in English and in the language of issue, and translations do not need to be notarised but they do need to exist.
HOW TO APPLY
Create an account on the application portal during the window, which opens in the second half of October 2026, and complete the form on a desktop browser. Mobile browsers are not supported. You will be asked to submit a CV, a statement of purpose, answers to three short additional questions, transcripts and diplomas for every degree programme you have attended, and the contact details of three referees. The additional questions are specific and technical: name up to three ISTA research groups in order of preference with reasons, choose a paper by an ISTA professor and explain its findings in your own words, and name an outside institution whose research excites you.
Materials checklist:
- CV - Statement of purpose, one to two pages - Answers to the three additional questions, five to eight lines each - Transcripts and diplomas, English and original language - Three referees with correct contact details - English proficiency evidence where applicable
COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
Writing a generic statement of purpose that never names a group is the fastest way to be set aside, because the form has already asked you to name three. Copying the abstract of the paper you are asked to discuss, instead of explaining it in your own words, is the second. Leaving the application unsubmitted until the final hours is the third: the portal sees heavy traffic near the deadline, extensions are never granted, and a half-finished draft is not an application.
DEADLINE
8 January 2027 at 15:00 Central European Time for applicants. Referees have until 12 January 2027. The programme starts on 15 September 2027.
TIPS TO WIN
Read the research group pages properly before you rank them, because your ordering is read as evidence of how well you have thought about the institute rather than as a preference list. Be concrete about technique in your statement, since the reviewers are scientists assessing whether you can contribute to a lab. Note your time zone when you plan the final submission.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU SUBMIT
ISTA processes applications once a year in a single round. Because you are chosen before you choose a group, the selection committee assesses research potential rather than a specific fit, and interviews form part of the process for shortlisted candidates. Referees must submit their letters by 12 January 2027, four days after your own deadline, which is tight enough that a referee travelling over the winter holidays can miss it. Confirm with each referee in early January that the request arrived. If you are unsuccessful you may reapply in a later cycle, but you will need to demonstrate significant additional experience and submit an entirely new file with fresh reference requests.
