Global Korea Scholarship 2027 (GKS-U) — Fully Funded Undergraduate Study in South Korea
Fully funded Bachelor scholarship in South Korea for International students 2026
The Korean government's GKS-U programme offers 286 fully funded undergraduate places for 2027, covering tuition, a year of Korean language training, living costs and airfare.
Eligibility
- Open to citizens of NIIED-designated countries aged under 25 (born on or after 1 March 2002) who hold or will hold a high school qualification by 31 December 2026, with results in the top 20 per cent of the class or equivalent. Applicants and their parents must not hold Korean citizenship.
## The Global Korea Scholarship undergraduate programme: What This Award Actually Covers
The Global Korea Scholarship undergraduate programme is one of the programmes students search for by name, and the search intent is almost always the same: can I qualify, and what do I have to do? This guide answers both from a student's point of view rather than restating the announcement.
The award is aimed at high school graduates and associate degree holders seeking a bachelor's degree in Korea. The single most useful thing you can do before writing anything is check the eligibility rules against your own record, because the majority of rejected applications fail on a formal requirement rather than on merit.
Always read the official programme page before you rely on any summary, including this one: the official Study in Korea GKS page
## Eligibility: Run Your Own Self-Check First
Before you invest a week in an application, answer these questions honestly.
- Are you a citizen of an NIIED-designated country for the track you are choosing? The UIC university track accepts applicants from all countries except Korea. - Are you and your parents free of Korean citizenship? Dual citizens with Korean nationality are not eligible. - Were you born on or after 1 March 2002? The age limit is under 25. - Do you hold, or will you hold by 31 December 2026, a high school qualification, or an associate degree for the bachelor's route? - Are you in the top 20 per cent of your class, or at least 80 per cent, or at the accepted minimum CGPA on the listed scales? - Have you never previously received a Korean government scholarship for a degree?
If you answered no to any of the formal requirements, stop and look at a different programme rather than trying to explain your way around the rule. Selection committees apply formal criteria before they read a personal statement, so a strong essay cannot rescue an ineligible application.
## Deadline and What the Timeline Really Means
The Embassy Track closed on 30 September 2026 at 18:00 KST. The University Track, which includes the UIC route, runs generally from September to November 2026, and each university sets its own deadline and submission method rather than using the central portal. Final results are expected around 7 January 2027. Because each university deadline differs, pick your university first and read that university's own announcement.
Treat the published date as the last possible moment, not a target. Two things reliably cause people to miss scholarship deadlines: waiting for a language test result, and waiting for a referee to write a letter. Both depend on other people. Request references at least six weeks early and book your language test before you start the application, not after.
## How to Apply
Decide on the Embassy Track or the University Track first, because duplicate applications across tracks are not allowed. Embassy Track applications are submitted through the Study in Korea portal. University Track applicants apply directly to one university and one department using that university's method, which may be by post or in person. Prepare documents early: your English name must match the passport exactly.
## Application Materials Checklist
- Application form according to the official guidelines - Personal statement and study plan - High school graduation certificate or associate degree, or proof of expected graduation by 31 December 2026 - Full academic transcripts with class rank or CGPA evidence - Proof of citizenship for the applicant and parents - Health and medical documentation - Passport copy - Any university-specific documents the chosen institution requires
## Tips to Win
- Choose at least one Type B university on the Embassy Track if the rules for your route require it. - Write the study plan around a specific field offered by a named university, not around Korea in general. - Note that one year of Korean language training is funded before the degree, so state your willingness to learn the language. - If you already hold a bachelor's, look at the separate GKS graduate programme instead.
The applicants who succeed are rarely the ones with the highest grades. They are the ones whose application answers the specific question the programme is asking, with evidence rather than adjectives. If the programme asks about development impact, give an example with a result. If it asks about research fit, name the work you want to do and who you want to do it with.
## Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying to both tracks. It is not permitted. - Applying with a bachelor's degree already held, which makes you ineligible for the undergraduate programme. - Choosing universities that are not on the official University Information list. - Letting graduation dates slip beyond 31 December 2026 without confirming eligibility.
A predictable failure pattern runs through most rejected applications: the candidate checks the headline eligibility criteria but misses one formal document rule, or applies to a version of the programme they are not eligible for. Reading the official call end to end, and comparing it against this checklist, removes almost all of that risk.
## Where to Get Help
Applying to international scholarships with documentation in a second language is where most strong candidates lose time and, sometimes, the opportunity itself. An OEAC advisor can review your eligibility, check that your documents match the required format, and help you work out which of these programmes fits your profile best.
Contact an OEAC advisor before you submit, and we will go through the requirements with you line by line.
