Fully funded Master's and PhD scholarship in Japan for International students 2026
The University of Tokyo Graduate School of Science nominates international students to MEXT for fully funded master's and doctoral study from October 2027, with a monthly stipend and tuition exemption.
Eligibility
- Open to international students without Japanese nationality, born on or after 2 April 1992, who hold or expect to hold the qualifications for admission to the Graduate School of Science at master's or doctoral level and meet the English or Japanese language requirement.
## The University of Tokyo MEXT scholarship: What This Award Actually Covers
The University of Tokyo MEXT scholarship is one of the programmes students search for by name, and the search intent is almost always the same: can I qualify, and what do I have to do? This guide answers both from a student's point of view rather than restating the announcement.
The award is aimed at international students entering the Graduate School of Science at Tokyo for a master's or doctoral degree. The single most useful thing you can do before writing anything is check the eligibility rules against your own record, because the majority of rejected applications fail on a formal requirement rather than on merit.
Always read the official programme page before you rely on any summary, including this one: the official University of Tokyo admissions page
## Eligibility: Run Your Own Self-Check First
Before you invest a week in an application, answer these questions honestly.
- Are you an international student with the nationality of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan, and not holding Japanese nationality? - Were you born on or after 2 April 1992? - Do you hold, or expect to hold, the qualifications needed for admission to the Graduate School of Science at master's or doctoral level? - Is your proposed field the same as, or closely related to, your previous degree? - Do you meet the language requirement, either English at around CEFR B2 or Japanese at JLPT N2? - Can you arrive in Japan within two weeks either side of 1 October 2027?
If you answered no to any of the formal requirements, stop and look at a different programme rather than trying to explain your way around the rule. Selection committees apply formal criteria before they read a personal statement, so a strong essay cannot rescue an ineligible application.
## Deadline and What the Timeline Really Means
Applications close on Friday 30 October 2026. The graduate school runs its own internal nomination before the university forwards candidates to MEXT for final selection, so the October date is a hard internal deadline rather than a MEXT one. There is no later chance if you miss it.
Treat the published date as the last possible moment, not a target. Two things reliably cause people to miss scholarship deadlines: waiting for a language test result, and waiting for a referee to write a letter. Both depend on other people. Request references at least six weeks early and book your language test before you start the application, not after.
## How to Apply
Apply for admission to the Graduate School of Science following the instructions for international applicants, then submit the MEXT scholarship application through the online electronic form before the deadline. Documents must be in Japanese or English, A4 format and printed double-sided, with certified translations where the originals are in another language.
## Application Materials Checklist
- Admission application to the Graduate School of Science, special selection for international applicants - MEXT scholarship application documents - Degree certificates and academic transcripts - Research plan for the proposed graduate study - English or Japanese language certification - Recommendation letters - Passport copy - Translations of any document not in Japanese or English
## Tips to Win
- Contact the graduate school or a prospective supervisor early. For this route it is the recommended first step. - Keep the research plan specific to work the Graduate School of Science actually supervises. - Note that recipients are guaranteed a room in the university lodge for the first year, which materially reduces the cost of arrival. - Check whether you are eligible for the additional regional stipend of JPY 2,000 to 3,000 a month.
The applicants who succeed are rarely the ones with the highest grades. They are the ones whose application answers the specific question the programme is asking, with evidence rather than adjectives. If the programme asks about development impact, give an example with a result. If it asks about research fit, name the work you want to do and who you want to do it with.
## Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating the MEXT application as separate from admission and submitting only one of them. - Submitting documents in the wrong paper size or without the required translations. - Applying for a field unrelated to the previous degree, which this route discourages. - Waiting for a confirmation email that never arrives and not checking the submission status.
A predictable failure pattern runs through most rejected applications: the candidate checks the headline eligibility criteria but misses one formal document rule, or applies to a version of the programme they are not eligible for. Reading the official call end to end, and comparing it against this checklist, removes almost all of that risk.
## Where to Get Help
Applying to international scholarships with documentation in a second language is where most strong candidates lose time and, sometimes, the opportunity itself. An OEAC advisor can review your eligibility, check that your documents match the required format, and help you work out which of these programmes fits your profile best.
Contact an OEAC advisor before you submit, and we will go through the requirements with you line by line.
