UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarship 2027 — Fully Funded PhD Study in Canada
Fully funded PhD scholarship in Canada for International students 2026
The Killam Doctoral Scholarship is UBC's most prestigious doctoral award, offering CAD 40,000 a year for two years plus tuition support to top PhD candidates in any field.
Eligibility
- Open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students pursuing a doctoral degree at UBC who have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of 1 September 2027. Assessment is 50 per cent research ability and 50 per cent relevant experience and achievements.
## The UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarship: What This Award Actually Covers
The UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarship is one of the programmes students search for by name, and the search intent is almost always the same: can I qualify, and what do I have to do? This guide answers both from a student's point of view rather than restating the announcement.
The award is aimed at doctoral candidates at the University of British Columbia who have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study. The single most useful thing you can do before writing anything is check the eligibility rules against your own record, because the majority of rejected applications fail on a formal requirement rather than on merit.
Always read the official programme page before you rely on any summary, including this one: the official UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships page
## Eligibility: Run Your Own Self-Check First
Before you invest a week in an application, answer these questions honestly.
- Are you pursuing a doctoral degree at UBC, in any field? - Will you have completed no more than 24 months of doctoral study as of 1 September 2027? This is a strict cut-off. - Are you a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or international student? The award is open to all three with no nationality restriction. - Have you transferred directly from a master's to a doctoral programme without a master's degree? If so, your eligibility is counted from the transfer date. - Can you demonstrate research ability and potential, which carries 50 per cent of the assessment weight? - Do you have achievements within and beyond academia to show for the other 50 per cent?
If you answered no to any of the formal requirements, stop and look at a different programme rather than trying to explain your way around the rule. Selection committees apply formal criteria before they read a personal statement, so a strong essay cannot rescue an ineligible application.
## Deadline and What the Timeline Really Means
Applications close on 17 October 2026 for the 2027-2028 competition. There is no separate application for the Killam Scholarship: you apply for the Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral competition and are automatically considered. That detail catches people out, because it means the deadline you must meet is the Affiliated Fellowships deadline at your UBC faculty, which may be earlier than the central date.
Treat the published date as the last possible moment, not a target. Two things reliably cause people to miss scholarship deadlines: waiting for a language test result, and waiting for a referee to write a letter. Both depend on other people. Request references at least six weeks early and book your language test before you start the application, not after.
## How to Apply
Apply for the Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral award competition through UBC. Confirm your faculty's internal deadline first, then prepare the research statement and the record of achievements that the two-part assessment actually scores. Approximately 25 Killam awards are offered each year to the top doctoral candidates in the competition.
## Application Materials Checklist
- Completed Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral application - Academic transcripts - Curriculum vitae - Research statement or proposal - Record of achievements within and beyond academia - Two academic references - Proof of citizenship or study permit status
## Tips to Win
- Build the achievement record deliberately. Community engagement, leadership and outreach are formally scored here. - Get the research statement reviewed by your supervisor, because research potential is half the score. - Note that awardees at the Vancouver campus also become Four Year Fellowship holders and may receive additional tuition funding. - If you transferred from a master's without graduating, check how your eligibility period is calculated before applying.
The applicants who succeed are rarely the ones with the highest grades. They are the ones whose application answers the specific question the programme is asking, with evidence rather than adjectives. If the programme asks about development impact, give an example with a result. If it asks about research fit, name the work you want to do and who you want to do it with.
## Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Applying for the Killam separately and missing the Affiliated Fellowships route. - Missing the 24-month doctoral study cut-off, which cannot be waived. - Treating this as a grades-only award. Half the assessment is experience and achievement outside academia. - Ignoring the earlier internal faculty deadline.
A predictable failure pattern runs through most rejected applications: the candidate checks the headline eligibility criteria but misses one formal document rule, or applies to a version of the programme they are not eligible for. Reading the official call end to end, and comparing it against this checklist, removes almost all of that risk.
## Where to Get Help
Applying to international scholarships with documentation in a second language is where most strong candidates lose time and, sometimes, the opportunity itself. An OEAC advisor can review your eligibility, check that your documents match the required format, and help you work out which of these programmes fits your profile best.
Contact an OEAC advisor before you submit, and we will go through the requirements with you line by line.
