Fully funded Master's and PhD scholarship for International students 2026

Australia's largest research scholarship round: full fee offset plus a A$41,100 annual living allowance, relocation grant and health cover. Round 1 for 2027 entry closes 31 October 2026.

Eligibility

  • Have applied for, and meet the entry requirements of, a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne
  • Be applying for a Masters by Research or a doctoral degree (PhD)
  • Be a future student or a currently enrolled graduate researcher
  • Be a domestic or international applicant
  • Be ranked highly by the selection panel on prior academic results and research potential

If you are searching for a fully funded research degree in Australia, the University of Melbourne Graduate Research Scholarships 2027 are the single largest door in the country — around 600 awards, automatic consideration, and no separate scholarship form to fill in. For a student weighing a research Masters against a salaried PhD abroad, this is the programme that decides whether Australia is realistic.

WHAT THE SCHOLARSHIP ACTUALLY PAYS FOR

A stipend and fee-offset award covers 100 per cent of your course fees plus a living allowance of A$41,100 a year at the 2027 full-time rate. That living allowance runs for up to two years on a Masters by Research and up to 3.5 years on a doctorate, and it is indexed, which matters because a 3.5-year commitment on a fixed figure quietly loses value every year.

On top of the stipend, international scholars receive a relocation grant: A$3,000 if you are moving from outside Australia, or A$2,000 from another Australian state or territory. Overseas Student Health Cover (single membership) is paid for international students who need a student visa. The published benefit ceiling on the official page is quoted as "100% fee remission and up to $135,000" over the life of the award, which is the number to keep in mind when you compare it against a salaried position.

There is also a fee-offset-only version. Domestic students offered a place automatically receive a Research Training Program fee offset. International applicants compete for the smaller number of stipend-plus-fee-offset awards, and that competition is decided by two things only: your academic results in prior study, and how convincing your research potential looks to a selection panel.

THE DEADLINE THAT ACTUALLY DECIDES YOUR YEAR

Round 1 for 2027 commencement closes on 31 October 2026. That is the round that matters — the university states plainly that most fully funded allocations are awarded in Round 1. Two later rounds exist, closing 31 January 2027 and 15 May 2027, but they are a safety net rather than a strategy. If you are currently enrolled at Melbourne and want to be reconsidered for a scholarship, or you deferred your commencement, you must also re-apply by that same 31 October date.

The practical consequence is uncomfortable: you cannot apply for the scholarship in October and start preparing in September. A graduate research application needs a supervisor who has already agreed to supervise you, a research proposal that fits that supervisor's programme, transcripts, and English language evidence. Work backwards roughly twelve weeks.

IS THIS SCHOLARSHIP ACTUALLY FOR YOU?

Ask yourself these before you invest a month of work. Do you hold a four-year Australian bachelor's degree or an international equivalent, with a research component worth at least 25 per cent of the final year? Have you identified a specific academic at Melbourne whose current research overlaps yours — not just the right department, but the right group? Can you explain in three sentences why this project has to happen at Melbourne rather than anywhere else? Do you already hold a research doctorate, or are you currently enrolled in a research degree somewhere else? If either of the last two is true, you are outside the eligibility frame.

You do not need a scholarship application form. You do not need a CV in a particular format. What you do need is a course application submitted in full by the closing date — everything else follows from that.

HOW TO APPLY, STEP BY STEP

Find your supervisor first. Read their recent papers, email them with a two-page proposal, and wait for a real answer. Applications without an aligned supervisor are the ones that get a fee offset and nothing else.

Then work through the materials checklist. You will need academic transcripts and graduation certificates for every degree, converted to the Melbourne grading scale where possible; a research proposal; evidence of English proficiency — IELTS, TOEFL or PTE Academic, at the level your faculty requires; two academic referee reports; and, for many faculties, a statement of your prior research in detail. Upload all of it before the deadline.

Then apply for the graduate research course itself. You will get a notification within about ten business days that a scholarship application has been attached to your record automatically.

Talk it through with an OEAC advisor before you submit — a second pair of eyes on the research proposal is usually the difference between shortlisted and rejected.

OTHER AWARDS WORTH READING ALONGSIDE THIS ONE

If your project leans towards the humanities or social sciences and you want the prestige layer as well as the funding:

If you would rather study in Europe, the French government's flagship postgraduate award follows a similar two-stage logic:

And for a Master's rather than a research degree, Switzerland's ETH Zurich excellence scholarship is the closest comparison:

FIVE MISTAKES THAT COST PEOPLE THIS AWARD

Applying in Round 2 because Round 1 felt early. Round 1 is where the money is.

Treating the scholarship as a separate competition. It is not — your course application is the entry ticket, and an incomplete course application is an incomplete scholarship application.

Writing a research proposal about a topic nobody at Melbourne supervises. Academic fit is scored, and there is no way to argue your way past it.

Leaving English test results to the last week. Test slots fill up, and results can take three weeks to arrive.

Ignoring the faculty-level requirements. Central requirements are the floor, not the ceiling — each faculty adds its own.

The award is offered to candidates whom selection panels rank highest on academic results for prior study and research potential in the field of study, so the strongest thing you can do is make your proposal legible to a non-specialist reader on the panel.
