Macao's flagship doctoral funding runs on rolling batches rather than a single annual round, and the first batch for 2027/28 closes on 23 October 2026. The master's first batch closes 3 December 2026.

Eligibility

  • Apply directly to the University of Macau as an international or local applicant — there is no nomination system
  • For the general PhD route: hold a master's degree or equivalent academic background
  • Accelerated entry routes exist for eligible current master's students and outstanding bachelor's holders with research potential
  • Meet the English requirement where your previous degree was not taught in English: TOEFL iBT 80, or IELTS 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5
  • Request scholarship consideration inside the PhD application — admission alone does not award funding
  • Check your specific programme's academic unit for additional requirements

Macao rarely appears on shortlists, which is exactly why it is worth a serious look. The University of Macau is ranked 145th in the Times Higher Education world rankings and 14th among the world's young universities, it teaches in English, and its doctoral scholarship pays MOP 20,000 a month for up to four years. Applications for 2027/28 are open now, and the first doctoral batch closes on 23 October 2026.

The catch is in how the funding is actually paid out, and it is a real one — read the next section before you build a budget around the headline number.

WHAT THE SCHOLARSHIP COVERS, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT

The UM PhD Scholarship provides MOP 20,000 per month for a maximum of 48 months. Unlike a fee waiver plus a stipend, the tuition charge is offset from the monthly scholarship, and the remainder is then paid to you. In practice that means your disposable monthly income is lower than MOP 20,000 — the headline figure is not cash in hand.

Continuation is not automatic either. Renewal is assessed annually on academic performance, duty performance and supervisor evaluation. Treat the four years as a series of one-year contracts rather than a single guaranteed block.

Admission and funding are also separate decisions. Being admitted to a doctoral programme does not entitle you to the scholarship, and the university says so plainly. You must request scholarship consideration while completing the PhD application, and the award is then decided competitively at university level. The doctoral scholarship and the UM PhD Teaching Research Assistant scheme run on their own application period, which for this intake opened on 3 August 2026 and closes on 8 January 2027 — a different date from the admission deadline.

WHO CAN APPLY — FOUR QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF

The general doctoral route requires a master's degree or equivalent academic background. UM also offers accelerated entry for eligible current master's students and direct entry for outstanding bachelor's holders with strong research potential, so a master's is not universally mandatory — but the direct route is genuinely competitive.

Ask yourself: does my degree match the entry route I am claiming? Has my previous degree been taught in English, and if not, can I produce TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.0 with no sub-score below 5.5? Have I picked a specific academic unit and read its own additional requirements, rather than assuming one university-wide rule covers every programme? And — the question most applicants skip — have I actually ticked the box requesting scholarship consideration inside the application, because a strong file with no funding request gets you a place and no money.

THE DEADLINES, AND WHY THE BATCH SYSTEM MATTERS

Doctoral programmes run in batches. The first batch for 2027/28 entry closed applications on 23 October 2026; the second batch runs from 24 October 2026 to 8 January 2027, for programmes starting in the first semester. A second-semester doctoral intake also exists.

Master's and postgraduate certificate applicants have a later first-batch deadline of 3 December 2026, with a second batch running from 4 December 2026 to 30 April 2027. If you are considering a master's rather than a doctorate, the international student scholarship for master's students is assessed automatically during admission — there is no separate form — and the packages range from a full tuition and accommodation waiver with a half teaching assistantship worth MOP 4,000 a month, down to a waiver of the international tuition differential only.

The practical point: later batches exist, but they compete for whatever funding is left. The first batch is where the money is.

HOW TO APPLY

Applications go directly to the University of Macau through its online system. There is no embassy nomination, no sending partner and no national quota.

Your materials checklist:

Degree certificates and academic transcripts for all prior study. Identification or passport copy. A curriculum vitae. Recommendation letters. A research proposal, where your programme requires one. English language evidence, if your previous degree was not taught in English. Any additional documents your specific faculty or programme requests.

Register for an online application account with your name, identification and contact details, complete the form, upload everything, and submit. Applications that are completed but never submitted are not processed, and late applications are not considered.

Not sure whether your file is competitive? Take it to an OEAC advisor before you submit — a second pair of eyes on the research statement is usually the difference between shortlisted and rejected.

OTHER ASIAN DOCTORAL ROUTES WORTH COMPARING

Hong Kong's PhD Fellowship Scheme is the obvious regional benchmark and closes on 1 December 2026:

For a master's rather than a doctorate in the same region, Yenching Academy at Peking University is the best-known Chinese option:

And Austria's ISTA programme runs a five-year contract model rather than a four-year stipend, which is a different structure entirely:

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

Reading MOP 20,000 as take-home pay. Tuition is offset from it first.

Assuming admission brings funding. It does not, and the funding request is a separate step inside the application.

Missing the scholarship scheme's own window. The doctoral scholarship and assistantship period runs to 8 January 2027, which is not the same as the admission batch deadline.

Applying to a later batch and expecting first-batch funding. Later batches are a safety net, not a strategy.

Assuming a master's degree is always required. Accelerated and direct-entry routes exist for eligible master's students and strong bachelor's holders.

Treating renewal as guaranteed. Continuation is assessed annually.

One more consideration worth weighing: the university runs its programmes both at the main campus and at its Hengqin teaching point in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone, so confirm where your programme is actually based before you plan your housing.
