Fully funded Master's and PhD scholarship for International students 2026

The University of Cambridge's central scholarship scheme: dozens of named awards for postgraduate study, each tied to a country, region or subject. Apply for your course with the funding box ticked by the 8 December 2026 deadline for 2027/28 entry.

Eligibility

  • Be applying for a full-time postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge (Master's or PhD)
  • Hold an offer (or be under consideration) from a Cambridge course — the scholarship is awarded on top of admission, never instead of it
  • Meet the specific nationality, residence or subject conditions of the named award you are being put forward for
  • Tick the funding section of the Cambridge graduate application — candidates who do not ask to be considered are not put into the funding competition
  • Submit before your course's own funding deadline, which for 2027/28 entry falls on 8 December 2026 for most courses
  • Show academic excellence and, for many awards, financial need

The Cambridge Trust is not one scholarship. It is the University of Cambridge's central funding scheme — a family of named awards, each tied to a country, a region, a partner organisation or a subject, and each with its own conditions. That structure is the single most useful thing to understand before you apply, because it changes the question you should be asking. The question is not "am I competitive for the Cambridge Trust?" but "which Cambridge Trust award names people like me?"

WHAT THE AWARDS COVER

The Cambridge Trust's scholarship finder lists the current awards and what each one is for. They are genuinely different: some are open to Masters and PhD applicants in any subject, others are restricted to one country or one region, and one or two are tied to a specific college or a specific discipline.

Because the awards differ, so does the money. The Trust does not publish a single identical package for everyone, and the amount you are offered depends on which award you are put forward for. Read the page for the award that matches your nationality, your subject and your level before you assume what you would receive. What is consistent is the route in: the University's central funding competition, which is where the Trust's awards are decided.

One structural point is worth clearing up early, because it confuses almost everyone. Applying to study at Cambridge is not applying for money. They are two decisions taken from the same form, and the second one only happens if you answer the funding question.

WHO CAN APPLY — AND THE SELF-CHECK THAT MATTERS

Start with the award list rather than the application form. If there is no award whose conditions you satisfy, there is nothing to apply for, and no amount of polish will change that.

Run these questions:

Are you applying for a full-time Cambridge postgraduate course starting in the Michaelmas term? Cambridge states plainly that to be considered for funding you must apply for a Michaelmas term start — a mid-year entry puts you outside the competition.

Does any award on the Trust's finder match your nationality, or your region, or your subject? Several awards are open only to applicants normally resident in one specific country or group of countries.

Are you ticking the funding box? The funding section is a real gate, not a formality. Candidates who do not indicate that they wish to be considered are not put into the competition at all.

Are you applying by the right deadline for your course? That is the trap. The University's funding deadline for 2027/28 entry is 8 December 2026 for most courses, but course deadlines are not uniform, so confirm the date on your own course page in the Cambridge Course Directory rather than trusting a blog post.

Can you show academic excellence, and — where the specific award asks for it — genuine financial need?

THE DEADLINE

For 2027/28 entry the University funding deadline is 8 December 2026. Applications are open now. Everything has to be in by that date: the course application, the funding questions, and the references. If your referees submit after the deadline, the file is incomplete when the funding panels read it.

Do not confuse the 8 December date with the earlier United States round used by some Cambridge funding schemes, nor with the later January deadlines that apply to a minority of courses. Check your own course page and write the date on a wall.

HOW TO APPLY, AND WHAT TO HAVE READY

You apply for the course through the University's Applicant Portal and answer the funding questions inside the same application. There is no separate scholarship form on the Trust's website.

Your materials checklist:

The completed graduate application for your chosen course, with the funding section answered "yes". Two academic references, plus any reference a specific scheme asks for. A statement of purpose, and for PhD applicants a research proposal. Degree certificates and transcripts, including official translations where the originals are not in English. English language evidence, if your course requires it. Any course-specific written work, portfolio or additional form listed on your course page. A note of your nationality and ordinary residence exactly as they appear on your documents — several awards turn on residence, not nationality.

Not sure your file is competitive? Take it to an OEAC advisor before you submit — a second reader on the research proposal is usually the difference between shortlisted and rejected.

WHERE CAMBRIDGE SITS AMONG YOUR OPTIONS

The Gates Cambridge award is the other large full-cost route into the same university, and it is decided in the same funding cycle:

Oxford's Clarendon Fund is the closest rival programme if you are weighing both cities:

And if you are considering the UK government route instead, the Commonwealth master's scheme is a different eligible-country list entirely:

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

Not ticking the funding box. It is the most common reason a strong applicant is simply never considered.

Assuming admission is enough. The scholarship sits on top of an offer; an offer alone secures nothing.

Applying for a January-start or part-time course and then looking for funding. The Michaelmas-term rule is explicit.

Using one deadline for every course. Most courses close on 8 December 2026, but not all — check your own page.

Skipping the award list. Ten minutes on the Trust's scholarship finder tells you whether any award actually fits you, which is better than discovering it after a refusal.
