Zonta Amelia Earhart Fellowship 2027
Partially funded PhD scholarship in USA for International (women) students 2026
A portable cash doctoral fellowship for women in aerospace and space science, awarded by Zonta International. The 2027 round closes on 15 November 2026.
Eligibility
- Be a woman of any nationality — this is not restricted by passport or by country of study
- Be registered full-time in a PhD or doctoral programme
- Have completed at least one year of that doctoral programme, or hold a master's degree in an aerospace-applied field, at the time you apply
- Be conducting research applied to aerospace engineering or space sciences, with a superior academic record
- Not graduate from your doctorate before April 2028 — applicants close to submission are excluded
- Not be in a postdoctoral position; post-doctoral research programmes are not eligible
- Not be a Zonta club member, direct member, or an employee of Zonta International or the Zonta Foundation for Women
- Not have held the Amelia Earhart Fellowship before — it cannot be renewed for a second year
The Amelia Earhart Fellowship has been running since 1938, which makes it one of the oldest awards in aerospace and one of the very few that a woman can win without a university nominating her. It is also unusual in shape: the money is paid to you, not to an institution, so it travels with you rather than tying you to a particular department. The 2027 round closes on 15 November 2026.
WHAT THE SCHOLARSHIP COVERS
The fellowship is a cash award for one academic year, usable at any university or college offering accredited postgraduate courses and degrees in aerospace engineering or space sciences. It is not a tuition waiver and it is not tied to one institution — which matters if you are mid-degree and thinking about a lab move, a fieldwork year or a conference-heavy stretch of your doctorate.
Zonta does not print a single fixed figure on the 2027 call page; the amount for the cycle is confirmed in the application pack, and Zonta district materials have quoted US$10,000 in recent years. Treat the number as something to confirm rather than something to budget against, and note that recipients may accept additional grants and scholarships from other sources, so the fellowship can sit alongside your existing funding rather than replacing it.
Since its founding the programme has made more than 1,800 awards to women from around 80 countries. The recent cohorts are genuinely international — India, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Thailand, South Korea and China all appear alongside the expected American and European names — which is worth knowing if you are wondering whether the committee really looks outside the United States.
WHO CAN APPLY — AND THE SELF-CHECK THAT MATTERS
The eligibility rules are unusually precise about timing, and most failed applications fail on timing rather than on research quality.
Answer these honestly:
Are you registered full-time in a doctoral programme right now? The fellowship is not open to master's students, postdocs or part-time doctoral candidates.
Have you completed at least one full year of the doctorate, or do you already hold a master's in an aerospace-applied field? One of those two must be true at the moment you submit.
Is your research applied to aerospace engineering or space sciences? A materials project that could be used in aerospace is not the same as a project framed around aerospace.
Will you still be enrolled after April 2028? Applicants who expect to graduate before then are excluded, which rules out anyone in the final year.
Are you outside Zonta's own membership and staff? Club members, direct members and employees are barred, as are their close colleagues in the selection process.
Have you held this fellowship before? It cannot be renewed.
THE DEADLINE
The 2027 application must be submitted in full by 15 November 2026. Every applicant is notified of their status by the end of April.
Fifteen November is early, and it falls in the middle of the northern-hemisphere teaching term — which is exactly when referees are hardest to reach. The pack asks for three recommendation letters, so the practical deadline for asking is the end of October.
HOW TO APPLY, AND WHAT TO HAVE READY
Applications go through Zonta's own online award portal. There is no nomination and no institutional route; you submit directly.

Your materials checklist:
Biographical information and a study plan. Transcripts of all previous degrees, with English translations where needed. A list of prior fellowships, scholarships and awards. A publication list, if you have one. Employment history, if any. An essay on your professional goals and your academic programme. Three recommendation letters from professors. Current enrolment verification, or an official statement confirming your doctoral registration. A copy of your passport, since the award is open to any nationality.
Still deciding whether your file is strong enough? Take it to an OEAC advisor before you submit — a second reader on the motivation letter and the transcripts is usually what separates a shortlisted application from a complete one.

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
Applying in the final year of the doctorate. The April 2028 graduation rule is explicit and it is checked.
Submitting a research statement written for a general science audience. The committee is made up of aerospace specialists; frame the work in their terms.
Missing the enrolment verification. A letter from your department confirming full-time doctoral registration is a required document, not a courtesy.
Asking referees in November. Three letters, in term time, with a hard close — ask in October.
Assuming the award is a tuition waiver. It is cash paid to you, which means you are responsible for how it is applied and for any tax consequences in your country of residence.
