Partially funded Master scholarship for International students 2027

Geneva's Faculty of Science pays CHF 10,000-15,000 a year to top-ranked master's entrants, with no teaching duties attached. Deadline 28 February 2027.

Eligibility

  • Have completed a bachelor's degree, or expect to complete it within six months of applying, in a discipline taught by the Faculty of Science
  • Rank among roughly the top 10% of your bachelor's cohort — selection is explicitly based on academic excellence, not on financial need
  • Meet the admission requirements of the specific Master of Science programme you choose
  • Complete the University of Geneva enrolment procedure first, or show the confirmation email that proves you have started it
  • Not already be enrolled in a master's programme at the Faculty of Science
  • Submit the whole application as a single PDF through the fellowship platform, using the personal link sent after registration
  • Provide a motivation letter tied to specific research groups at the Faculty, and ideally two reference letters sent directly by your referees

Geneva's Faculty of Science runs a fellowship that is small, old-fashioned and unusually honest about what it is buying: academic excellence, with no teaching duties attached. There is no financial-need test and no development criterion. If you were near the top of your bachelor's cohort and you want a research-track master's in Switzerland, this is the most direct merit route into the country, and the deadline is fixed at 28 February every year.

WHAT THE SCHOLARSHIP COVERS

The fellowship is a grant of CHF 10,000 to 15,000 a year, with no teaching or assistantship duties. It is awarded for the first year and then extended for the regular duration of the chosen master's — three or four semesters — provided you are evaluated successfully at the end of your first term.

Two things are worth being clear about. First, this is a contribution, not a full ride: Geneva is one of the most expensive cities in Europe, and CHF 10,000 does not cover rent and living costs on its own. It is a strong contribution towards them, and Swiss tuition itself is modest. Second, the extension is conditional. A weak first semester ends the funding even if you stay enrolled.

The Faculty covers astronomy, biology, chemistry and biochemistry, chemical biology, computer science, mathematics, physics, pharmaceutical sciences, earth and environmental sciences, neuroscience and prehistoric archaeology, plus bi-disciplinary masters with a major and a minor. Most programmes do not require French, which is the question applicants ask first.

WHO CAN APPLY — AND THE SELF-CHECK THAT MATTERS

Selection is based on the application file, and the file is judged on academic excellence. The published bar is that you rank among the top 10% of your institution's cohort.

Run these questions:

Did you finish, or will you finish within six months, a bachelor's in a field the Faculty of Science teaches? Final-year students are accepted, but the degree has to be complete before the master's starts.

Can you evidence a top-of-cohort standing? A transcript with grades is the minimum; a class-rank letter or a statement from your department is much stronger.

Have you chosen a specific master's programme and checked its admission requirements? The fellowship does not bypass admission — you must meet the programme's own criteria.

Have you started the University of Geneva enrolment procedure? The application asks for a scan of your UNIGE card, or the central administration email confirming your candidature has been registered. Without that, the fellowship file is not considered.

Are you already enrolled in a master's at the Faculty of Science? If so, you are not eligible.

Can you name two professors who will send references directly to the Faculty's fellowship address? They are optional in the guidelines and close to essential in practice.

THE DEADLINE

The deadline is 28 February, every year — for the September 2027 intake that means 28 February 2027. The application platform opens at the beginning of January, and after registering you receive a personal link by email.

The sequencing catches people out. You cannot apply for the fellowship before you have started the university enrolment, and the enrolment itself takes time in December and January. Work backwards from February: admission file in December, enrolment started in early January, fellowship PDF submitted by mid-February.

HOW TO APPLY, AND WHAT TO HAVE READY

You complete the University of Geneva enrolment procedure, then apply for the fellowship online through the link the Faculty sends you. Everything goes in as one PDF.

Your materials checklist:

A single PDF containing the whole application — incomplete files are not considered. A scan of your passport or national identity card. A CV of no more than two pages. Your complete bachelor's transcript, with all grades. A motivation letter describing your scientific interests and why this master's, at this faculty. Two reference letters, ideally emailed directly by your professors to the Faculty's fellowship address. Optional but useful: GRE or TOEFL results and any evidence of research experience.

Still deciding whether your file is strong enough? Take it to an OEAC advisor before you submit — a second reader on the motivation letter and the transcripts is usually what separates a shortlisted application from a complete one.

OTHER SWISS AND EUROPEAN ROUTES

The Swiss government excellence scholarships cover research and doctoral study nationally:

Oxford's Clarendon Fund is the closest merit-only comparator in the UK:

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

Sending several files instead of one PDF. The guidelines are explicit and the file is rejected rather than reassembled.

Applying before starting enrolment. The confirmation email from the admissions office is part of the pack.

Writing a motivation letter about Switzerland. Write about the research groups and the specific programme.

Ignoring the first-semester condition. The second year of funding depends on it.

Treating CHF 10,000 as a full budget. Plan the rest of your living costs before you accept.
