Fully funded Master scholarship for International students 2027

An Erasmus Mundus master's in security, intelligence and strategic studies taught across at least three European cities, with tuition, insurance and a monthly allowance covered. Scholarship applications close on 7 January 2027 at 13:00 UK time.

Eligibility

  • Hold a conditional or unconditional offer from the University of Glasgow for IMSISS
  • Not have held an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarship before
  • Submit a personal statement, academic records and evidence of relevant research or professional experience
  • Be ready to study in at least three European cities, including a Czech mobility period
  • Complete the scholarship application by 7 January 2027 at 13:00 UK time

Security studies programmes tend to be either academic or practitioner-facing. IMSISS tries to be both, teaching intelligence analysis and strategic studies across at least three European cities with input from bodies such as NATO, the EU and the UN. It is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master, so the funding is the full package rather than a discount, and the 2027-2029 scholarship round is open.

The scholarship deadline is 7 January 2027 at 13:00 UK time. The programme's own site is explicit that self-funded applications stay open until July, which makes the January date easy to misread as optional. It is not: it is the only date on which scholarship consideration happens.

WHAT THE SCHOLARSHIP COVERS

Scholarship holders pay no tuition. The Erasmus Mundus award covers the full fee including the deposit, with the consortium covering any portion the EU grant does not, plus full insurance coverage. On top of that sits a monthly subsistence allowance for the whole two years, paid in one of two ways: EUR 1,400 a month with no travel payment, or EUR 1,275 a month plus three advance payments of EUR 1,000 at the start of Year 1, the end of Year 1 and the start of Year 2. A contribution towards travel and installation costs is optional and tied to the second structure.

The quota structure is the detail that changes strategy. Fifty regular scholarships are spread across four editions with no more than six per nationality, and twenty additional scholarships are reserved for specified regions under the EU's external action instruments. A crowded nationality is a real disadvantage; the targeted pool is not subject to the 10 per cent rule.

WHO CAN APPLY

You need a conditional or unconditional offer from the University of Glasgow before the scholarship deadline, and your offer status must not be sitting at "holding for documents" when the clock stops. You cannot have held an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters scholarship before. The consortium ranks on personal statement at 40 per cent, academic merit at 30 per cent and relevant research or professional experience at 30 per cent.

Ask yourself: is my Glasgow offer already issued rather than pending? Does my statement explain a security problem I want to work on, not just a career I want? Do I have research, policy or field experience that counts as the third criterion? Is my nationality likely to hit the six-place ceiling? Can I study in at least three cities across two years, including a Czech mobility period with its own visa rules?

THE DEADLINE AND WHAT HAPPENS AFTER IT

The scholarship form and the Glasgow application both have to be complete by 7 January 2027 at 13:00 UK time. The consortium ranks applications afterwards, keeps a reserve list, and announces results in April 2027. Self-funded applicants have until 8 July 2027 if they are EU or international, and 24 August 2027 if they are home or rest-of-UK, with a GBP 2,000 deposit to secure a place, payable after scholarship results for those who applied for funding.

HOW TO APPLY, STEP BY STEP

Apply to the University of Glasgow for IMSISS first, because the scholarship requires an offer. Once the offer is issued, complete the scholarship application form linked from the programme's apply page and upload every required document. Write the personal statement against the five thematic areas the programme publishes: emerging technology and digital resilience, war and peace studies, radicalisation and organised crime, intelligence and strategic planning, and human and environmental security. Submit before 13:00 UK time on 7 January 2027. Watch for the April result and respond within the window given.

Materials checklist: degree certificate and transcripts, English proficiency evidence, personal statement, CV, references, passport identity page, and any research, publication or professional evidence you intend to rely on for the 30 per cent experience criterion.

TIPS THAT ACTUALLY MOVE THE NEEDLE

Because the personal statement carries 40 per cent, it is the highest-leverage document in the file. A statement that names a specific security governance problem, explains why the programme's mobility structure helps you study it, and shows what you would do with the training will beat a broader essay about wanting to serve your country.

Second, use the experience criterion deliberately. A documented internship, a published policy brief, a research assistantship or a structured field project are all evidence; list them with dates and outputs. Third, mind the visa sequencing: the Czech mobility period has rules that depend on your nationality, and the programme itself warns that some applicants can only apply for a Czech visa in specific countries.

MISTAKES THAT GET APPLICATIONS DROPPED

Applying for the scholarship without a Glasgow offer, or with an offer still holding for documents.

Reading the July self-funded date as a scholarship deadline.

Ignoring the six-per-nationality ceiling when deciding how many competing applications to expect.

Submitting a statement that describes the programme rather than your research problem.

Leaving the deposit question unresolved. Scholarship applicants do not pay it until after results, but self-funded applicants do.

If your statement needs a second reader who understands how Erasmus Mundus panels score, bring it to an OEAC advisor before January. The difference between a shortlisted and a reserve-list application is usually one paragraph of specificity.
