Fully funded PhD scholarship for International students 2026

A fully funded PhD at the University of Auckland with a tax-free NZD 35,468 stipend and tuition fees for up to 42 months. Apply by 1 November 2026.

Eligibility

  • Must be applying for or offered a place in an Auckland doctoral programme
  • Must not enrol before the scholarship outcome is announced
  • Considered automatically when applying for the doctoral programme, with no separate form
  • Four award rounds a year, with different apply-by dates for each
  • Guaranteed awards for Māori and Pacific applicants with a GPA of 7.0 or above

The University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship is not a separate application. Any candidate offered a place in a doctoral programme is considered for it automatically, and the next round for 2027 closes on 1 November 2026, with offers out by 1 February 2027. For a PhD applicant who wants funding settled before committing to a supervisor and a move, that structure is the point: there is one form, one deadline and one decision, rather than a place offer followed by a funding scramble.

What it covers

The award pays a tax-free stipend of NZD 35,468 per annum, adjusted each January for inflation, for up to 42 months full-time equivalent, plus tuition fees for the same 42 months and the compulsory single-student health insurance charge where it applies. The stipend length varies by doctoral programme, so the 42 months is a ceiling rather than a promise, and the terms document sets out which programmes run shorter.

Two details decide the real value of this award. The first is that the stipend is tax-free, which makes it worth materially more than the headline number suggests when compared with a taxed stipend of similar size elsewhere. The second is the inflation adjustment: the university recalculates the rate every January using a published method tied to the Reserve Bank's November forecast, so a three-and-a-half-year award does not quietly shrink in the later years. Very few doctoral stipends in the English-speaking world do this.

Guaranteed scholarships exist for Māori applicants and for Pacific applicants who hold a New Zealand university qualifying programme GPA of 7.0 or above and are offered a doctoral place. That guarantee is a structural commitment rather than an admissions preference, and it is worth understanding if you are advising someone who fits it.

Who can apply

You must be applying for, or offered, a place in a doctoral programme at the University of Auckland, and you must not have enrolled before the scholarship outcome is known. That rule is stricter than it reads: enrolling early to secure a visa or a start date can remove you from the round, so the sequence is offer first, scholarship decision second, enrolment third.

The scholarship does not publish a separate academic threshold for general applicants. The practical bar is the doctoral programme's own admission standard, and the competitive layer sits on top of it — a strong enough research proposal and academic record to be ranked within the round's allocation. Because rounds run four times a year, a weak outcome in one round is not final; it means waiting for the next.

Run this self-check. Have I identified a supervisor and a programme with a start date that matches a 2027 enrolment window? Have I worked out which round my application will fall into, and does that round's "apply by" date leave time for references and a research proposal? Have I avoided enrolling before the outcome? Do I have transcripts with the grading scale, an English test result if required, and a research proposal the department has indicated it will support? And if I am a domestic candidate, do I understand which enrolment dates my round allows? A no on the first question is the one that needs fixing first, because a scholarship cannot be awarded without a place.

The deadline

For the 2027 rounds the published dates are: apply by 1 November 2026 for an offer by 1 February 2027; apply by 1 February 2027 for an offer by 1 April 2027; apply by 1 May 2027 for an offer by 1 July 2027; and apply by 1 August 2027 for an offer by 1 October 2027. International candidates with an international qualifying programme have a wider set of permitted enrolment dates than domestic candidates, which is worth checking against your intended start.

How to apply

You apply for the doctoral programme through the university's online admissions system, and inside that application you confirm whether you wish to be considered for a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. If you already hold funding, or do not want to be considered, you say so in the same place so that the application can be processed faster. There is nothing to send separately and nothing to send to a scholarship office.

The one document people forget is the visa support letter. If you are an international student, you can request a letter confirming your funding through the student portal once the award is made, and visa timelines in New Zealand are not short. Build the wait into your planning rather than booking a flight on the strength of an offer email.

Tips to win

Because there is no separate scholarship statement, the research proposal is doing double duty: it has to satisfy the department that you are admissible and the selection committee that you are fundable. Those are different tests. A proposal that is excellent on the literature but vague about method and feasibility reads as admissible but not necessarily worth a scarce funded place.

Make the project's first year concrete. Committees funding a three-and-a-half-year award want to see that the first twelve months have a plan, a data source or an archive, and a realistic scope. And if your work connects to one of the university's signature research areas, say so explicitly with a reference to the actual area, because the scholarship's stated strategy is built around them.

Common mistakes

Enrolling before the outcome and losing eligibility. Missing a round because references were slow, then assuming the year is gone. Submitting a proposal written for a different university's system, where the supervisor's role in admission is different. Treating the guaranteed scholarship criteria as applicable when they are not. And forgetting that the stipend duration depends on the programme, so budgeting for 42 months when the terms allow less.

An OEAC advisor can check which round your intended start date falls into and review the research proposal for the feasibility points committees look for. Ask the advisory team for a review before the 1 November cut-off.
